Abstract

Background and Study Aim. Students enrolled in physical education programmes regularly participate in practical classes, sports training, fitness activities, and extracurricular physical activities. Such continuous participation may increase the likelihood of sports-related injuries. Information on reported sports injuries among these students may support the development of institutional injury prevention strategies. The present study aimed to retrospectively analyze reported sports injuries and to identify the major injury patterns, anatomical distribution, and possible contributing factors associated with injury occurrence.

Materials and Methods. The study employed a retrospective descriptive research design using injury records maintained at the health center of Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education, NERC, Guwahati. A total of 362 reported sports injury cases documented between 2022 and 2026 were included in the analysis. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods, including frequencies, percentages, and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs).

Results. The findings revealed that knee injuries accounted for the highest proportion of reported cases (25.97%), followed by back pain (22.38%) and ankle injuries (16.30%). Male students accounted for a higher proportion of reported injury cases (66.57%) than female students (33.43%). The annual distribution of reported injuries increased from 2022 (16.02%) to 2025 (28.18%), followed by a decrease in 2026 (11.60%).

Conclusions. The study showed that sports-related injuries were frequently reported among students of higher physical education institutions. The findings support the implementation of systematic injury surveillance, workload management, preventive conditioning programmes, and recovery strategies to strengthen sports injury prevention and promote student well-being.
